The Russell R. Chambers Endowed Scholarship

The Russell R. Chambers Endowed Scholarship

Scholarship benefitting outstanding School of Dance Students.

Established by Kenneth S. Aubert and the former Chambers Ballet Company. Russell R. Chambers, who attended UNCSA from 1964 until 1968 as a dance student, always had a deep appreciation for the training and education which he received here. After graduating from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, Mr. Chambers became a principal dancer with Les Grands Ballets Canadiennes in Montreal, Canada. From there, he went on to be a principal dancer with the Jaffrey Ballet, Stars of American Ballet, and was a featured dancer in Bob Posse’s DANCIN’. In 1981, following his featured role in John Houston’s Film ANNIE, he suffered an injury and subsequently moved to Boston. Mr. Chambers joined the faculty at the Boston Conservatory as Ballet Master in 1982, where he taught for three years. In 1986 he founded his own school, the Chambers Dance Theatre, and a year later along with Kenneth S. Aubert, he co-founded the Chambers Ballet Company, a suburban ballet company dedicated to bringing professional dance to the suburbs of Boston at affordable prices. The company continued until 1996 and was funded in part by grants from the National Endowment for the Alts, the Massachusetts Cultural Council and local arts agencies. Mr. Chambers was a member of the Actors’ Equity Association, American Guild of Musical Artists, Screen Actors’ Guild, International Ballet Council, Boston Dance Alliance and Associated Grantmakers of Massachusetts. While in Boston he was a guest lecturer at the Massachusetts College of Art and the Boston Conservatory, and created unique dance presentations for the Boston Museum of Fine Arts as well as for local schools through the Massachusetts Cultural Council.
