Established by Ashley Gates Johnson (BFA, 1994) in 2014, in honor of Robert Beseda.

Why establish this scholarship to honor Robert Beseda? In the words of Ashley Gates Jansen…
Because of his 22 years of devoted service
Because of his great wit
Because of his passion as an artist and educator.
Because he kept so many wonderful theatre stories alive and passed them down to countless students
Because he made me laugh out loud
Because of his stealth acts of tenderness
Because he wrote some of the best letters and speeches I’ve ever heard
Because his heart is bigger than his bite
Because he understood his role and played it with a vivid charm and unsinkable tenacity.
Because he established a film seminar for the freshmen class ensuring they’d all be familiar with some cinematic classic gems
Because he was ruthless and relentless in his commitment to excellence for our beloved school’s sake
Because I and many, many others love him
But most of all because when Gerald asked him to be the Assistant Dean, Robert replied with one magical word revealing his entire spine: Yes.

Impact

The scholarship allowed me to remain a part of a community where everyone is hungry to collaborate. I’ve met artists who I know will be life-long collaborators and I’ve develop mentorships with some of my favorite instructors. –Fourth Year Undergraduate Recipient
