Livingston Military Scholarship
Cynthia Ellen Livingston established the Livingston Military Endowed Scholarship to honor her parents, Rear Admiral William H. and Margaret B. Livingston, for their love, sacrifice, and unwavering support of her dreams. She began her ballet training in earnest at the age of 12 while living in Virginia. At 14, Cynthia was awarded a Ford Foundation Scholarship, and in 1966 she attended George Balanchine’s summer program at the School of American Ballet in New York City.
The frequent moves required of a military family often made it difficult for Cynthia to find suitable ballet training. When her father received orders to the West Coast in 1967, she auditioned for and was accepted to the North Carolina School of the Arts, where she spent her last two years of high school and two years of college (1967-1971). Although her dance career was cut short by an injury, Cynthia never lost her passion for ballet and endowed this scholarship to help students from active military families pursue their own artistic ambitions.
