Jay Clemmons Memorial Scholarship

This merit-based scholarship benefits students enrolled in the Guitar Program at UNCSA School of Music.

Established by Cheryl Clemmons in 2021 to honor the legacy of her son, Jack Hunter Clemmons III “Jay”.

Jack Hunter “Jay” Clemmons, III, born on July 20, 1976, lived his life outside the mainstream as a gifted fine artist and musician. He was a tender-hearted rebel who devoted himself to mastering the guitar as a teenager and later evolved into a prolific abstract painter at UNCG. “Jaybird,” as he was known to his friends and family, was a warm, loving young man who generously shared his time, company, and interest in the arts. Well-known for his witty and charming ways, Jay was an avid bicyclist and devoted father to his daughter, Ruby. He created an epic music collection containing decades of
songs that inspired him, from Jimi Hendrix to Michael Jackson to Black Flag. Never one to put himself first, Jay would be humbled to be the namesake of this scholarship, and he would be honored to help young talent achieve an education in the arts and accomplish their dreams of self-expression. This scholarship will enable Jay’s true artistic gifts to give lasting meaning to his short life.
