Helen Copenhaver "Copey’’ Hanes was the daughter of a Lutheran minister. She married Gordon Hanes in 1941 and together they championed many philanthropic and cultural causes in North Carolina and beyond. During her life Copey was involved with Salem Academy and College, Old Salem, the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Arts Council, the North Carolina Museum of Art, Habitat for Humanity, and Reynolda House Museum of Art. She has served on the UNCSA Board of Trustees and the Board of Visitors, and is a founding member of the Giannini Society, Encore Society and Founders Society. Mrs. Hanes received the Giannini Award in 2006 for outstanding contributions to UNCSA.

As a student studying the vocal arts, this scholarship not only eases the financial burden of my studies but also motivates me to continue striving to succeed.
