David A. North who was a longtime Electronic Theatre Controls, Inc. (ETC) employee, North Carolina Gentleman and support of The School of Design and Production. David North loved the theater, but more than that, he loved helping people. He spent most of his career combining those two loves by working as a senior manager in the Technical Services department at ETC. He worked at ETC for over 20 years. His last role there was serving as the General Manager for ETC’s rigging division. His career and life was spent in service to others, so it is only fitting that a scholarship should be created in his name. He had a deep respect for the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and the theater electricians that it produces. He gave of his time and energy to the school, including mentoring many interns during the course of his career at ETC. He died at the age of 50 after a brief battle with brain cancer in 2017. Though his life was short, his legacy lives on in the hearts and minds of everyone he touched.
Impact
The scholarship has been able to help fund my education at UNCSA which allows me to be immersed in an arts environment. As a Boston Native, I knew going to school out of state at UNCSA would help me build the skills needed to achieve my dream job of working with a Broadway production. The education is unlike any other university and has prepared me for stepping out into the industry with the tool kit needed to succeed, especially with a touring show. I’m currently working on a projection show as the Production Electrician which is introducing new concepts that are essential to a touring production. Thank you again for your generosity and support. I look forward to giving back and helping others who are passionate about lighting as I build my career. –Fourth Year Undergraduate Recipient
